The History of Warfare series relates the story of conflict from earlist times to the present. Much more than a blow-by-blow account of wars, it explores all of the world’s major conflicts through the centuries. The series also deseribes the great commanders, key weapons, and decisive battles on lan, at sea, and in the air that have played important roles in deciding the outcome of major military events. All of the factors infuencing the conduct of war, including terrain, technology, interlligence, generalship, moral - and luck - are analyzed in detail.
This volume follows the course and development of conflict from the collapse of the Roman Empire in A.D. 476 to the end of the 15th century. The fall of the Roman Empire saw the loss of much military knowledge and this was only regained slowly. For a time most armies contained large numbers of untrained civilians or semitrained conscripts, but the key personnel were the mounted knights. Covered in armor and armed with lance, shield, and sword, they were virtually invincible in battle. However, toward the end of the period a new breed of professional soldier emerged. These men fought on foot and had considerable military experience. They were armed with weapons, chiefly the bow and spear, which could defeat mounted knights. These professional foot soldiers began to tight in permanent armies and recive regular pay. New weapons also began to appear, particularly cannon and early muskets.
