Ancient Civilizations. Vol. 01. Aborigines - Astronomy
Danbury, Connecticut: Grolier Educational, 2000. — 80 p. — ISBN: 0-7172-9472-2.
This is one of a set of 10 books telling the stories of the peoples and civilizations of the distant past. Thousands of years ago hunter-gathering peoples began to settle down in villages and start to farm. They also began to develop many remarkable skills. They learned to make clay into bricks and pots, they learned to mine metals and fashion them into ornaments, tools, and weapons, and they learned how to weave cloth out of the fibers of plants. In a surprisingly short time some of these peoples were living in large cities and were trading with other people great distances away.
The books in this set relate these achievements and also describe some of the notable inventions that helped human beings along the road to civilization, such as the wheel, the compass—and sanitation. Some of the entries in this book describe a particular people or civilization in depth, while other entries take a subject, such as “Numbers and Counting,” and examine it across a range of civilizations. Other entries look at archaeological sites of special interest and tell the story of their discovery. The entries are arranged alphabetically and are illustrated with photographs, drawings, and maps. Each entry ends with a list of cross-references to other entries in the set. At the end of the book there is an illustrated timeline to help you relate the civilizations to each other in time. There is also a useful “Further Reading” list and an index covering the whole set.
