The mysterious worlds of the ethnic groups of North Caucasus, their life and habits at the beginning of the XIX century attracted European missionaries, which hoped to turn local population into Christianity. The emperor of Russia Alexander I was also very much interested in the quickest economic development of the Caucasus. This was the reason why Scottish missionaries were allowed to the area of North Caucasus Mineral Spas for “spreading of the industriousness, arts and manufactories in the low populated area, neighboring to the ethnic groups of the Moslem religion, without any education”.
