Keats John. The Crack in the Picture Window
Auckland, NZ: Pickle Partners Publishing, 2016. — 149 p. — ISBN: 1787200655; 9781787200654.
The major theme of this book is how housing developments, by drawing people with similar backgrounds and tastes, create monotonous situations that are not truly communities. As each person attempts to find something that differentiates his or her self from the neighbours, that something is consumed by the neighbours, rendering it no longer unique. At some point, gadgets bought on time begin to be used as a way to alleviate the monotony, leading to a vicious cycle. Through all this, the inhabitants must endure the pitiful houses sold to them by certain builders whose primary goal is maximum profit. Keats discusses how these poorly-built boxes are a money-making racket. This book is a must-read for anyone who is looking into buying a "home" in a subdivision. Although old, much of it is still relevant.
This is the ace that Drone crew
An’ the walls come tumblin' down
Life faces Mary
Onward and Downward
It's only money
Here we go again
Goodbye, MR. Drone
Here's cheer, mates
