Featherstone Donald F. Victorian Colonial Warfare, India: From the Conquest of Sind to the Indian Mutiny
Blandford, 1993. — 161 p.
This is more than a coffee-table book, in spite of being heavily illustrated. Contents include: The Sindh War 1843, the Sikh Wars 1845-1846, the Gwalior War, and a graphic account of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858). Mr Featherstone is already well-known in his wargaming world as a capable author and perhaps best on the nineteenth century. The angle of this particular book is interesting and makes it a very good complement to what you may already have on India, on any of the 5 wars covered, on the colonial British Army and its foes. The 5 wars are: Sind, Gwalior, 1st Sikh, 2nd Sikh and the Indian Mutiny. The nagle is to use contemporary battle reports to do most of the work. These fall into 3 categories, official despatches from the field by commanders, eye-witness accounts and newspaper reports by journalists who were usually present too. This makes the content very immediate, very un-PC and quite thrilling at times.
