This publication illustrates the wealth of major Greek and Roman sculpture in American museums. The number of acquisitions by North American museums in the past half century has made such an appreciation long overdue. Cornelius C. Vermeule, curator of classical art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, since 1957, has for the last thirty years attempted, in the midst of many other projects, to keep abreast of new acquisitions and collections. His continually updated manuscript "Checklist of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Sculpture in America" is consulted by foreign and American students of antiquity, typescripts being available in Boston, Malibu, and Cologne, Germany.
