Raue Dietrich (ed.) Handbook of Ancient Nubia
De Gruyter, 2019. — 1124 p.
The modern history of Egypt and Sudan has repeatedly intervened radically in the Nubian way of life and continues to do so to this day: After the large dam constructions of the 20th century, new dam, construction and prospecting projects are also the reason in the 21st century to to explore large areas of Nubian terrain under enormous time pressure. As a result, a tremendous increase in knowledge was achieved in all areas of cultural history. This is supplemented by discoveries in Egyptian sites, adjacent desert areas and neighboring metropolitan areas. The 42 articles in this handbook are aimed at diachronic, regional and large-scale perspectives. Beginning with the findings of the Palaeolithic, the path to the juxtaposition of pastoral societies and larger cultural spaces in the floodplain is presented. From the Bronze Age cultures to the kingdoms of Napata and Meroe to the Christian kingdoms and the early modern Islamic period. This anthology intends to bring the interested cultural scientist up to date with the latest research and to convey the checkered history of this link between the Mediterranean region and Africa.
