This first comprehensive study of the history of the period between the 20th dynasty and the Saite rulers consists of six parts. The first three parts successively discuss the chronology of the 21st Dynasty, the 22nd to 25th Dynasties, and the high officials of the realm such as the highpriests of Ptah and Amon, the viziers, the dignitaries in Heracleopolis, etc. These fourteen chapters contain a wealth of information and discussion about dates, genealogies and relationships of the kings and the notables of the period. Part IV offers a continuous political history, beginning with a survey of the situation during the 20th Dynasty, through the reigns of the 21st Dynasty, the Libyan and the Nubian dominions until the beginning of the Saite Period.
Part V consists of seven excursuses about special problems such as the bandage epigraphs in the 21st Dynasty, the cults of Tanis and Thebes, the Palestinian campaign of Shoshenq I and the story-cycle of Pedubastis, etc. Part VI contains 24 tables concerning dates of kings, ready-reckoners for contemporaneous reigns, royal genealogies, chief dignitaries and contemporary rulers in the Near East.
Reprint, with an additional supplement by the author, entitled "1995 Preface" (p. xiv-xlvi), in which he adds some new data and responds to alternative hypotheses put forward by authors including Karl Jansen-Winkeln, David Aston, Anthony Leahy, John Day, Leo Depuydt, and David M. Rohl. The supplement to the 1986 re-edition is reproduced at the end (p. 527-608).
