The classic examination of the work of art historians
The book is a goldmine of information on the topic and perhaps the best one out there if you want to learn about the development of art history as a discipline in itself. However, you will have to set aside a lot of time to go through the book, especially if you're not familiar with foreign languages such as German or Italian as there are many, many book titles in there without translations.
