Biryukova N.Y., Forman W., Forman B. The Hermitage, Leningrad: Gothic and Renaissance Tapestries
Hamlyn, 1965. — 248 p.
The distinguished collection of tapestries in the Hermitage Museum, Leningrad, with its 300 pieces, covers the main stages of the development of European tapestry weaving over the centuries. There are rare hangings from Germany, France and Flanders dating from the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth, as well as some Italian and Flemish masterpieces from the middle and latter half of the sixteenth century. There are also fine specimens of English and Spanish tapestry of the same period, and many French, Belgian, English and Geinian pieces representing nineteenth-century tappestry from western Europe. However, the bulk of the collection is made up of Flemish and French tapestries of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
